Fasting is an important aspect of a Christian journey. In Zechariah 7:5 ;Say to all your people and your priests, ‘During these seventy years of exile, when you fasted and mourned in the summer and in early autumn, was it really for me that you were fasting?.

The true essence of fasting is self denial and sacrifice. It really helps us to rip ourselves off of our desires and things that can take our attention from what really matters. In this chapter, Zechariah even went further to highlight the kind of activities that should accompany a fasting period.

Our fasting doesn’t help God but rather it helps us to align ourselves to his will and shapen our requests in prayersIt is expedient for us to ensure that our focus is on God and his will during fasting or without fasting. 1. Matthew 6:16-18

And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Why have we fasted, and you see it not? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you take no knowledge of it?’ Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure, and oppress all your workers.
